Good budget tacos, but not much else at Pancho Villa’s taco and seafood shack.

Poncho's shack

When students go to Pancho Villas taco and seafood shack off Santa Rosa and Foothill they usually go for the bargain deals, mostly the tacos, according to the service there.

Pancho Villas is off to the side of the Shell Station in a little shack house with a picnic table setting on the side and around the building.  Pancho Vila’s is a good place for late night taco binging and a refreshing horchata, but if not there a slew of other Mexican food joints in San Luis Obispo to dine at.

They also take credit and debit, which is nice, because Tacos de Mexico and a few of the other taco joint waterholes do not.

Though Pancho Villas is nothing near spectacular they do make an excellent chicken and carne asada taco. The service is usually pretty fast. The steak and chicken has a lot of flavor and juice to it, and is usually topped off with cilantro, taco sauce, guacamole, tomatoes and sour cream. One downside when eating at Pancho Villas is the service often forgets or just doesn’t care to put guacamole on your tacos or burritos, which can be a downer for the guac lover. The tacos run for $2.10, which is a bit high, considering you can get tacos of better quality for a dollar at many taquerias in San Jose and San Diego, but this is San Luis Obispo.

Carne asada taco...delicious. Fish taco...ehh

Chicken and asada taco = quite delicious, but cutting it close on my taco budget.

Besides the chicken and carne asada taco I haven’t found many other notable dishes that catch my eye at Pancho Villas. The fish tacos are bland, have little flavor, and often linger in your mouth due to their intense chewiness.  The breakfast burritos I have had at Pancho Villas, which include the chorizo and egg burritos, and super breakfast burrito are a bit flavorless, and they’re a bit skimpy with the chorizo. The large horchata for $2.50 is pretty good, and has a refreshing aftertaste.

The burritos at Pancho’s are okay, nothing to write home about. They’re also a bit costly for a student budget. Pancho Villa’s burritos cost $4.50 each, and I believe most students would be willing to pay a $1.25 more to eat a fatty chicken burrito at the new Chipoltle in downtown San Luis Obispo or a filling burrito at El Nabor off California.

I usually stop by for a taco every now and then.

Interesting site on the actual Pancho Villa, the rebel general of the Mexican revolution.
